Who is Giang Biscan?
While my personal website at giangbiscan.com is in a mess, … ahem… I meant, being updated, I thought I will put some notes here about me:
Internet:
I was a co-founder of an internet startup in the late 90’s. Sold my shares in 1998. Disappeared from the internet since and just recently started to come back to join the startup community. I am looking for a tech co-founder to work on a startup together.
I am the Producer of Mixergy.com – very thrilled and grateful to Andrew Warner for this opportunity.
I am tinkering with a few websites (around 20+ domains). They bring in some revenue.
Business:
After I sold my first internet business, I used the money and went into real estate investment for a while and now still hold a portfolio of residential properties in Australia, Vietnam and USA.
I did my MBA at UCLA and during that time became an event freak. I organized 200+ business events during those years. Few interesting events:
- Startup LA in 2007 (organized with Andrew Warner and 3 others) – one of the first tech startup event for the LA community – ~300 in attendance of the 2 day event.
- Executive career night – a tech recruiting events for senior roles in 16 companies including Google, Yahoo, Symantec, Yahoo, Cisco,… The event had 200+ people in attendance.
- A speaker event for Asia Society, bringing in the Australian Consulate General to talk about doing business with Australia
- Several business networking events at Griffith Park with activities that allow strangers to bond in team activities, each event with ~40 to 70 in attendance.
I teach and coach business owners at various programs at UCLA and local city. Some of my students include Vavni, Ay Que Chevere, Mattioli, NCAABA, Spartan Direct, Spindel Farms, DES…
While I was off the internet, I was also running a part-time consulting business, sourcing telecommunication and pneumatic equipment for partners in Vietnam.
The “other” identity:
I have a PhD in Chemical Engineering from the University of Newcastle in Australia. During my PhD, I developed a system for processing minerals that is saving Australian coal industry $100M+ per year. As a result, I was honored to receive a lot of medals, awards and media coverage.
I later joined a manufacturing company to build a factory in Southern California.
I have been working in the Intellectual Property field for the last 5 years, managing a patent portfolio at a public company – the portfolio values at just under $1B.
Personal:
I am:
marriedwith kids;- idealistic and naive;
- an introvert;
- a workaholic.
I love traveling and have been to many countries in Africa, Asia, Europe, Oceania & America.
To overcome my shyness, I worked part-time as a runway fashion model in Australia for Chaays Modeling agency.
I am a certified advanced SCUBA diver.
